6 Important Tax Tips for Military Families

6 Important Tax Tips for Military Families6 Important Tax Tips for Military FamiliesEven soldiers have to pay taxes. That said, military families have access to some unique tax-reducing strategies that arent available to civilians. Understanding and following the tax tips outlined below may help you cut your tax liability and put some extra money in your pocket. Deduct Your Moving Expenses Moving costs a lot, and when its due to a permanent change of station, (PCS), you arent always reimbursed for the costs. However, you may be able to deduct some of the expenses from your taxes. The IRS allows military families with PCS orders and unreimbursed moving expenses to write off reasonable costs associated with relocation and moving. Of course, the definition of reasonable can change, depending on your familys specific situation. So you should speak with a tax expert who can make sure that youre writing off everything thats allowable. And, as odd as it sounds, the IRSs website has som e valuable pointers. You Get Free Help With Your Taxes In most cases, civilians have to pay someone to help them with their taxes, but service members and their families have access to free tax help. Youll find that your base has a number of tax professionals on hand to help answer questions, provide guidance, and even help you file your taxes through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. unterstellung individuals are all certified by the IRS and volunteer their time and expertise to assist military families with tax problems and concerns. Combat Pay Putting aside what you have to do to earn it, one of the benefits of combat pay is that your family doesnt have to include it in your annual income (which makes it tax-free). In certain circumstances, you may want to count combat pay as income. For example, increasing your annual earnings might make you eligible for certain tax credits such as the Earned Income Credits. Unfortunately, including or excluding combat pay is an all-or-nothing deal, meaning that you either take the whole thing or none of it. Dont Sweat the Deadline Just the mention of April 15- the traditional deadline for filing taxes- is enough to strike fear into many civilians heart. But since servicemembers have so many other things to occupy their minds, they arent held to the same schedule. If youre going to miss the deadline to file, and youre stationed in a combat zone, you automatically gain an extra six months of time to get your information in. That applies whether youre paying your taxes or filing for a tax refund. Saving During Transition If you or your spouse are transitioning from military life to civilian life, you might have some tax write-offs that can save you a considerable amount of money. Some of the costs you incur having to do with finding employment, for example, could be deductible. These include assistance in creating a resume, travel for interviews and applying for work, and even some job placement fe es. Spouse State Taxes Before the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act, military spouses had to pay income taxes to the state where they happen to be stationed, as well as to their official home state. It created a heavy burden. With the passing of the MSRRA, spouses are no longer required to pay both. They can now pay only the income taxes for their official state of residence, and avoid being taxed in where theyre living. It can offer significant relief if your home states tax rate is lower. There are many other ways to save on your taxes, so speak with a tax professional on base to learn more.

People willing to lose 2.4 hours of sleep per night for $25,000 raise

People willing to lose 2.4 hours of sleep per night for $25,000 raisePeople willing to lose 2.4 hours of sleep per night for $25,000 raiseCan you sleep your way to the top? Actually, many people think you have to sacrifice sleep to get there. While many people lose sleep at night over work stress, many are willing to give up sleep for success or a major raise at work, a new survey found.Mattress Advisor surveyed over 1,000 working professionals, from entry-level to executives, about their sleep habits and how their ideas of success. The most surprising, if slightly disturbing finding Respondents would be willing to lose almost 2.5 hours of sleep per night for a $25,000 pay raise. How well theyd perform on that amount of sleep is up for debate the people surveyed said that the least amount of sleep they could really function on was 5.5 hours. Even losing just 2 hours of sleep can effect your mood, and one recent study says missing just a couple of hours of sleep over two days was enough to cause significant anger.Sleep, money powerThe less money offered, the less sleep respondents said theyd be willing to sacrifice. People said they would give up 1.6 hours for a $10,000 raise, and one single hour of sleep for a $5,000 raise. And then theres power Men would choose more success (50.8%) over sleep, but 55.6% of women would choose sleep over success.Men said theyd be willing to give up an average of 30 minutes more sleep than women each night (1.9 hours vs. 1.4 hours) to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 Company. When it comes to perks, men and women agree each would give up an hour of sleep for an extra week of paid vacation, or the privilege of working from home once a week.Execs do it less?Who prioritizes sleep in the hierarchy? Not those at the top of the chain. 54% of executive said they thought it was necessary to give up some to be successful. Only 42.9% of entry-level workers felt the saatkorn way.42% of execs also felt it was worth being sleep deprived for success. That feeling trended down by hierarchy 32% of middle management felt the same way, and approximately 25% of both intermediate and entry-level workers agreed.Curiously, 54% of executives reported getting an average of 6.6 hours of sleep every night. Only 39% of middle management only received that much, and 35% of entry-level workers. That last point is a good thing for execs weve just seen the latest example of sleepless CEOs with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose sleep-deprived ramblings filled the media until Arianna Huffington and Richard Branson both have had to tell him to get some sleep.

Lessons from Bradley Cooper in empowering people

Lessons from Bradley Cooper in empowering peopleLessons from Bradley Cooper in empowering peopleI saw A Star Is Born on opening weekend and, despite my outlandish expectations, it was one of the best movie experiences Ive had in years. But that doesnt mean I planned to write about it.However, reading and watching the discussion around the film has revealed to me surprising details that matter for leaders and managers. Bradley Cooper, as director and standard-bearer for this film, has done two things besides make a well-received movie. He has 1) consistently given public leistungspunkt to others, and 2) demonstrated that he understands that creating a vision for a team means leaving room for those people to shine.Giving creditCoopers notlage being glib or thoughtless in his praise of others, at least not that Ive seen. He doesnt give credit when its not warranted - say, denying his role in the directing, acting or storytelling. He doesnt embellish the accomplishments of whomever hes praising, either.Rather, when an aspect of the film is mentioned that was accomplished by someone else, Cooper gives specific credit to that person. This sounds insignificant, and maybe it should be, but such actions stand out in our society. This isnt entirely new. He went on Ellen over a year ago to talk about the movie while it was being made, and almost immediately, he answers Ellen DeGeneres Youve written, youre directing, youre starring in A Star Is Born by noting that he has two co-writers on the film.He then goes on to talk about how audiences will get to witness Lady Gagas talent, as well as how hes learned how difficult singing is when you need to do it on camera. These are small things, but when people are asked to talk about yourself publicly, they tend to only talk about themselves.More recently, I saw Cooper deflecting Jimmy Fallons praise for having the No. 1 song on iTunes (Shallow) by noting the songwriters. This could just be the type of name-checking that you see a t awards shows (Id like to thank my agent , but Im not so sure. After all, most folks dont know or care who Mark Ronson is, nor do they care that Cooper only sang on the song and didnt compose it.If you accomplish something, stand up for it. Enjoy the praise But its so easy to start taking credit for things you didnt do or start to think that you didnt have help along the way.Vision requires a collectivePerhaps more surprising to me is to hear the stories of A Star Is Born actors talking about how Coopers generosity as a screenwriter and a director. After all, he spent years thinking about this movie, securing the rights and funding, writing the script and songs, preparing to act and direct, soliciting cast members, ensuring the film slyly mentioned every predecessor. Cooper even spent months changing his voice to win over Sam Elliott. He potentially put his career on the line to remake a film that had last been attempted, rather inauspiciously, more than 40 years earlier. One might think hes being a micromanager. And perhaps he was with certain things. But then you see Shangela of RuPauls Drag Race talk about getting to improv the drag bar scenes. Coopers real-life ear doctor, who has an early scene, says he was told to improv because you know this stuff much better than whatever we wrote into the script. If thats not enough, theres the interview with the woman who plays his assistant she told Vulture how Cooper encouraged her and other actors to build on the scripted dialogue. This direction Cooper provided wasnt just about freedom but also about a safe environment. Dave Chappelle has acted in many films, and he had one of the most famous and renowned comedy shows ever made. But A Star is Born was different for himThe way he directed me and the way we would talk about the scene, and the way he would create an environment that gave me the courage to actually be vulnerable in a way that comedy would never let me be. I never felt threatened or unsafe.Even Cooper felt free to disregard his own script at times. His vision appears to have been bigger than just the script. The one thing that I begged of everybody in the room here is to trust me, Cooper said. Even if the movie sucked they were going to be authentic no matter what.Note that none of the characters mentioned above are, technically, essential to the movie. But they were essential to Coopers vision, and he told them so in his words and actions. When you have essential people, you want them to deliver their best. And so you guide them, but you also dont get in their way.Where are you taking credit when you shouldnt? Where can you take a moment to spotlight someone who is deserving but underappreciated? If you have authority and power, how can you deploy it to showcase the deserving people around you?James daSilva is the longtime editor of SmartBriefs leadership newsletter and blog content, as well as newsletters for distributors, manufacturers and other fields. 3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea

3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good IdeaBy EssaySnarkWhy is visiting schools before applying for your MBA so important? Here are some questions to considerWould you buy a car without test-driving it first? Were elend the first to use this metaphor, but it works. Applying for an MBA program without visiting first is like buying a car sight-unseen. (Derrick Bolton, Stanfords head of admissions, actually equates it to buying a housethe cost of tuition plus the opportunity cost of foregoing a salary for two years.) B-school is a MUCH bigger investmentand more life-changingthan any new car will ever be. If youre going to drop six figures on your graduate education, why not pony up a little time and money in advance to check out how that investment might work for you?Do you really know what the school is all about? You might not get it just from reading their websites, but every MBA program truly is different. School visits can not only giv e you a feel for the campus, the professors and the students, they can also give you valuable insights from the admissions officers when you attend an info session. These insights can help you write your essays. All schools want to know why youve chosen them. Youll need to explain it in your essays and your interview. Everyone wants to go to Harvard, because its Harvard. The applicants who are admitted are the ones who can articulate why they want to go there. Are you truly certain you want to go to that school? Only one business school encourages all applicants to visit campus (and interview) before applying, and that school is Tuck, at Dartmouth. Most other b-schools say that youre welcome to visit, but they understand if you cannot, and they insist that visiting doesnt give anyone an advantage. (Of course, what weve just discussed indicates a very strong advantage, in terms of the learning youll gain about the school, which you can feed into the essays youll be writing.)So why do es Tuck want you to swing by for a spell? We suspect the main reason for this is due to their location. They are up in the mountains, in Hanover, N.H., remote and removed from everything. All thats going on at Tuck is Tuck. Its a completely different b-school experience than youd have at, say, NYU-Stern, which is more a collection of big buildings scattered throughout New York Citys Greenwich Village than a campus per se. The admissions folks at Tuck want to make sure that you know what youre getting into before you get in. So they want you to visit, to see it for yourself, and possibly save everyone some time if you discover its not the right distributionspolitik for you.School visits help you go beyond the MBA rankings, when selecting target schools, to understanding how a school is differentiated. They can make a big difference for you in the entire process of applying. Visiting the school in advance of applying is somewhat comparable to an informational interview that you might have when exploring a new career. Youre doing your research, asking some questions, seeing if its a fit. Youre kicking the tires, as it were. And, you might actually discover that you dont want to go there. We had a client visit UC-Berkeley once. Afterwards, she flew back home to New York feeling more committed than ever to go to Columbia (and yes, she got in). Haas wasnt for her. She never wouldve known that without putting forth the effort to go discover it for herself.Cruise over to the EssaySnark blog for more advice on school visits and applying to Tuck, NYU-Stern, UC-Berkeley Haas, Columbia, Harvard... and any other great MBA program.

Boosting qualifications and skills is key to your employment future

Boosting qualifications and skills is key to your employment future Boosting qualifications and skills is key to your employment futurePosted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunAustralia may see the creation of up to 9.3 million new jobs over the next 15 years, according to projections set out by Skills Australia in a recent report. The key to filling those openings and preventing future skills shortages will be finding people with the right qualifications. So if you thought your studying days were behind you, you may have to think again. The increasing complexity of production and the projected growth in job openings will translate into demand for additional qualifications. Up to 4.6 million additional qualifications may be needed over the next 15 years to meet the demands of employment growth.Analysis by Access Economics reveals that job roles are becoming increasingly complex, so employees need corresponding higher levels of qualifications and skills. Skills deepening will become cr itical for Australia to remain competitive and productive.Economic growth demands extra qualifications and so does your careerUnder the highest future growth scenario, the economic demand for qualifications will require that 62 per cent of employed people hold qualifications at the Certificate III level or above by 2015. The COAG (Council of Australia Governments) target would see 76 per cent of working-age Australians possess a Certificate III or higher qualification by 2020. This would necessitate an average annual increase in tertiary study enrolments of three per cent each year for at least the next 10 years a target which may be difficult to achieve based on current enrolment rates. Skills Australias estimates project that by 2020, those with such qualifications will fall short of the COAG target by more than 1.5 million. The greatest demand will be for qualifications at the diploma or degree level. While there will be a general move away from certificate qualifications, de mand for Certificate III and IV qualifications, particularly specialised trade qualifications, will remain strong. The highest growth in demand will be amongst professional, community and personal service workers. Eighteen per cent of job openings will be in professional occupations such as finance and insurance, and technical and computer services. High demand will also be seen in community and welfare services, carers and aides, university and vocational teachers, and ausverkauf and administration.Education leads to employmentThere is a clear association between level of education and labour force participation. In 2008, 86 per cent of people with a non-school qualification were employed, compared to 71 per cent of those without one. Similarly, 44 per cent of unemployed 25-to-64 year olds lacked post-school qualifications, compared to 39 per cent of all unemployed people in this age group. Those of prime working age were often hampered in their attempts to find work by a lack of skills or qualifications that would enable them to be competitive in the labour market. Concerted efforts have been made in recent years to increase education levels, strengthen the apprenticeship system and improve labour market support for the younger and older unemployed. In 2008, 54 per cent of people aged 20 to 64 had a post-school qualification, compared to 46 per cent 10 years earlier. This is a positive trend but may not be enough to meet future employment demand and fill Australias skill shortages and skill gaps. This means that updating skills and qualifications will be important for many people, including those from a diverse range of backgrounds workers in the mid to late stages of their careers, those living in remote and rtlich Australia, people with disabilities, indigenous Australians, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, mature-aged students and single parents. We also need to take measures to increase the proportion of school leave rs who progress to tertiary education. It is only by increasing the proportion of adults participating in education and training that employment and economic targets will be met. Employers therefore need to come up with flexible and innovative ways to support ongoing education and upskilling, and accommodate the training needs of employees at different stages of their working life.
